Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Hello,

I am using Ubuntu 20.04 using kernel version 5.15.0-124-generic on a Dell Optiplex 790. I am using this version of Ubuntu because it is the latest one that supports my graphics card, an Nvidia Quadro 6000. (I have spent all day trying Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04, they do not work with my graphics card). The latest available drivers for my graphics card is Nvidia driver 390.

My OS is fully updated, and I've tried installing the latest Steam the normal way. Using the latest version of Steam, it never launches. The steam client never appears. I did some digging. There are lots of errors in the logs related to the GPU (see screenshot above). When I start steam via Terminal, the last few messages just repeat over and over infinitely.

I searched a long time for a solution and found this thread:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/6171701036702941590/?ctp=2

In there on page 2 (which I've saved for my reference) there are instructions on how to download the April Steam client. I followed these instructions and the instructions on how to launch without checking for update (also on page 2) and this worked. Steam now launches using the older April client.

So this means something between the April client and today's client broke my Steam client on my system.

I don't want to loose the ability to play Steam games on my computer, I paid money for them and my computer is able to run them with this April client.

I am asking if there is anything you can do to make the latest client work on my computer again.

Thanks,
Wayne Workman

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Use Ubuntu 20.04 fully updated, use Nvidia Quadro 6000 with nvidia 390 drivers.
  2. Install latest Steam client, it never launches.
  3. Install steam client from April, it launches.

Hi, I appreciate you identifying this as a duplicate. Though my circumstance is a little different than that other one perhaps. As well, I've given a lot more details here. Thank you.
