Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): 1726604483 (Stable) / 1729208001 (Beta)
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): SteamOS 3.6.19 / 3.7.0 (Deck) and Manjaro w/ Gnome 46 (Desktop)
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: Issue is present on both Stable and Beta
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes
  • Steam Logs: steam-logs.tar.gz
  • GPU: AMD Van Gogh RDNA 2.0 (Steam Deck) and RX 7800XT (Desktop)

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Floating menus remain in the foreground and obstruct the Steam interface when navigating away from them via the Steam Menu or Quick-Access Menu. Gamepad input focus will correctly be shifted to the new area, but the background blur and menu / prompt will remain in the foreground. In this state, selecting Power from the Steam Menu will open the Power Menu, but the Steam Menu will continue to be the one registering Gamepad input.

This issue affects the following elements in Steam:

  • Manage Menu
  • Steam Deck Compatibility Card when installing a game for the first time, but not the one that appears when pressing Details on the Game Info tab.
  • Install Prompt
  • EULA Prompt
  • Launch Options
  • Power Menu

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Navigate to a title's Game Details Page.
  2. Select Manage (⚙️).
  3. Press the Steam button to open the Steam Menu.
  4. Press A to select Home.

Reproduction Rate: 5/5

Affected Devices

  • LCD: Yes
  • OLED: Yes
  • Desktop Deck-like session (gamescope -e -- steam -gamepadui -steamdeck): Yes
  • Desktop: Yes, in Big Picture Mode.

Actual result

  • The floating menu remains in the foreground obfuscating the newly active area of Steam. Gamepad input can no longer be used to interact with it.

Expected result

  • When navigating away from a floating menu using the Steam or Quick-Access Menu (Add Friend, Browse Soundtracks, Visit Help Site, etc...), it should be dismissed and not obfuscate the newly navigated area of Steam.
  • When navigating within the Quick-Access menu (and not away from it; ex: Toggling performance overlay level), returning to the floating menu should have it regain focus and allow Gamepad input to continue interacting with it.

Notes

  • This issue can be resolved by using the Touchscreen (Deck) or rebinding / using Steam Chords to emulate mouse input (Desktop). Touchscreen will however not function to dismiss the menu if the user navigated to a webpage (ex: Visit Help Site under the Help tab of the Quick-Access Menu) and will first have to back out of it before being able to dismiss it.
  • Invoking the Power Menu by holding the Power button or puting the device to sleep and waking it up will correctly regain focus of the menu (Deck).

This has been mostly resolved like for example in https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/10724
Only a very specific version of this problem exists as is documented in https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/10754

I can confirm that all the items highlighted above do maintain Gamepad focus now when navigating away using the Steam Menu. You can therefore continue to interact with them and properly dismiss them using the Gamepad.

Closing, fixed.
