Steam client opening links in Google Chrome causes Chrome's UI fonts to break.
I'll test this. I've done it before, but didn't have it happen.... then again, I was using Chromium, not Chrome.
Makes me lean slightly more towards it being Chrome, but definitely an issue.
Found the cause of the bug.
Steam is using it's own environment variables when launching Chrome which includes Pango.
More specifically this env:
PANGO_LIBDIR=/home/christian/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu
This can be tested easily by adding the env to a terminal and then launching chrome.
export PANGO_LIBDIR=/home/christian/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu
/usr/bin/google-chrome
Can confirm using Chromium on Arch Linux.

When Chrome is already open it just opens it as a new tab.
Confirmed, same thing happens under Ubuntu 12.10 Gnome Remix with Chrome 24. Tho it's fine when Chrome is already open.
Can you confirm profile corruption in all or even some cases? It seems like I'm not getting any more profile corruption with this issue (Might have been caused by something else) but the core issue with the fonts still exists.
No profile corruption. Anyway profile bug in Chrome under Linux is known for few years now and is not Steam related.

@slouken I tried both your steam-runtime updates, while fixing the tray icon, spawning a PCManFM (or probably other GTK Filemanager) through "Browse Local Files" temporarily breaks fonts in the filemanager

Well, this one is akward: The current combination of Steam (Built Jan 30 2013, at 13.02:19) and Chrome ( Version 25.0.1364.58 beta from the official Google Debian/Ubuntu repositories) causes me some trouble. Whenever the Steam client opens a link ( like the link to the old forums on top of the discussions page) in a fresh instance of Chrome the abomination shown in the picture above happens. Opening a link on an already running instance, thus creating a new tab, is totally fine and if i change my default browser to Firefox it works as it should in both cases.
Having other programs open Chrome such as Empathy and Thunderbird works so I really can't say if Steam or Chrome is at fault.
It seems this misbehavior coincides with the Chrome beta having received an update earlier this Thursday ( UTC+1), though.
I will try wiping Chrome's cache now and see if that does anything.
EDIT: Wiping cache and deleting the profile does nothing, in fact I just noticed that this behavior also corrupts Chrome's current user profile every time!
EDIT2: Profile corruption was unrelated to this issue and thus has been removed from the title.
