So it is. It looks like small brick in upper left corner of the screen.
The problem appears after the update what added tray integration for Steam.
Screenshots shows it ingame and on desktop, covering the browser.

This doesn't happen for me under unity on 64 bit, what's your DE.

I can't repro this.

this appears to be an uninitialized window spawned in the foreground.

It's hard to say what's going on since this doesn't happen for me, but there was a code path that was letting windows stay around undrawn that will be fixed in the next client. On the other hand, a small number of people have had issues with windows getting stuck in the upper-left-hand corner and that seems related to something in their specific window manger/driver configuration.

I got the same problem. It happens as soon as I use the integrated web browser and a tooltip is shown. The tooltip doesn't disappear properly:

The tooltip issue is the thing that will be fixed in the next client.

My DE is Gnome Classic on Ubuntu 12.04 64bit.
Also, my system menu bar is placed on the left side of the screen. Could it make a difference?

Did yesterday's update help with this?

Yes, it looks like so.

I get this when starting a game directly from desktop and not loading Steam first, the Steam client isn't a window when the bug presents. When client is loaded first it is a window that cannot be closed, only minimized. However it is intermittent for me so I can only be so certain.

(My specs)

This happens on elementary OS. It will not happen on Unity or with GNOME Shell because they do not use a window for their panel (eOS, GNOME classic, XFCE, tint2, and many tiling WMs do use a window for their panel).

This is the same as #2170, isn't it?

MMightyPork 2013-11-04 github

Yes, it's the very same glitch as #2170. If possible, they should be merged or this closed, since #2170 has more technical info, so it's more useful for the devs.

However, considering how old this issue is, it looks like the devs simply don't care.
