I don't know about Unity, but KDE has an alt-tab window switching feature that behaves similar to Windows-Tab in Windows, bringing up a CoverFlow-style menu of open windows and fullscreen apps. So far, Trine 2 behaves more or less correctly (the game continues to run with sound), while World of Goo and Amnesia block the key combination completely.

Half-Life behaves the worst, briefly glitching up the screen before toggling a mode where you can interact with the desktop even though it's not visible. The pointer is the white KDE default pointer, and changes based on where it's hovering just like you had successfully tabbed out, and everything is clickable (clicking briefly glitches up the screen again). It's just that you can't see any of it because the Half-Life menu is still covering the screen. Hitting Alt-Tab again makes the game interacterable again, backwards pointer and all.

Kubuntu 12.04 LTE x64, ATI Radeon HD 4850.

Alt-Tab does work in Unity, at least on 12.10, but that's probably due to Compiz, not the shell. If you can, try Compiz on your computer.
