Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Valve Software should support the Steam Flatpak officially.

There is official Steam support for only Ubuntu's regular and long-term support releases. Because of this, most Linux users need to use a version of Steam not supported by Valve Software. This may make Linux less desirable to people wanting to switch. This makes Linux adoption slower which hurts Valve Software and users because less Linux adoption means less developers wanting to support Linux platforms.

Supporting this Flatpak officially would allow for official support for all of the distributions that you can install Flatpak on. Flatpak is the same for all distributions so behavior of Steam should be consistent.

The unofficial Steam Flatpak on Flathub is very popular.

Valve Software officially supports a Flatpak: Steam Link.

If Valve Software doesn't want to solely rely on only Flathub for getting the Steam Flatpak, Valve Software could provide a download for a .flatpak on the Steam download page or on their own Flatpak repository.

It might be helpful to have a tracker for issues with the unofficial flatpak and with flatpak in general that would need to be solved to consider the steam flatpak an official experience.

Having been a user of the flatpak for over a year, I know that it's very close, but there are probably niche issues that need to be ironed out

Don't know why I didn't think of that 😅

Show, with the flatpak signed, Valve only has to gain, the community and users too, it's going to be top
👍😄

I have to wonder, is there an official reason that Valve doesn't want to explicitly support flatpaks?

I think it's probably just the investment effort - time and money - that is probably being allocated in other more pressing issues. To make the steam client fully flatpak-aware would take time. The unofficial flatpak is a good starting point but there are other problems that would need solving.

For valve, I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of those "nice to haves" that isn't done due to more pressing issues. If the Flatpak were the officially supported distribution method, almost every distribution (save for Ubuntu) would have a very easy official way to consume Steam.

This opens to a "page not found" error. Also trying to find it in the list of issues isn't showing up either. Was it deleted?

Yes, something irregular occurred and that issue report is no longer around. You'll need to find it on an internet archive site if you want to see (some of) the older discussion.

@kisak-valve with KDE making KDE Linux (Previously codenamed Project Bannana) and Steams close ties with KDE (partially close at the very least) will a Flatpak hopefully be more considered in the future as KDE Linux will be heavily reliant on Flatpaks.

i heard that Steam will now be running in a container (or something similar as i'm going off of recent memory) to help solve the dependency mismatch problem so hopefully that could bring us closer to an official Steam Flatpak somehow if that makes any difference.

The main reason I say this is because I feel like the whole "i'm waiting for SteamOS" crowd would probably be better off with something like KDE Linux when it has a stable release and then install Steam as a Flatpak.

With it also being a better mainstream distribution for people coming from Windows, since KDE Linux gets rid of the problem of people having to think about the whole difference between a desktop enviroment and the actual distribution itself since KDE Linux would be an all-in-one solution whilst being normal enough (not centered around a specific thing like gaming) for most people to switch to, whether they are into gaming or not, from Windows or even MacOS.

Also, I asked Nate Graham (one of the main people that works at KDE) in the KDE Linux Matrix chat and even he said he uses the unofficial Steam flatpak and that isn't just some random Linux user lol (the only reason i thought to mention this is just to add emphasis on how strongly I think an official flatpak would be much appreciated since even the highly technical users like Nate Graham who works at KDE uses the Steam Flatpak).
