Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): 1736213535
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): CachyOS (Arch Linux)
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: Yes
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes
  • Steam Logs: N/A
  • GPU: AMD Z1 Extreme (Phoenix APU)

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

When viewing Steam custom intro movies, either during Steam client launch or their previews in the Customization section, the movies will sometimes play with what sounds like double audio. This seems to happen only 50% of the time but it leads to heavy audio distortion when it does happen.

Attaching videos below of a "normal" sounding intro vs a "bad" sounding intro, where volume was kept the same between both clips:

This was not an issue I experienced before today's Steam Deck beta client update, 1736213535

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Choose any intro movie from the Customization menu and preview it
  2. If it sounds normal, try a few more times

this only happens if you play the video preview from the customization page or if the custom intro itself plays during steam's launch. If you go to Settings -> Customization -> Visit the Points Shop and preview the intros there, no double audio ever plays.

Can confirm this is happening both on Steam Deck & Steam for Windows. Seems to be client related than SteamOS/Linux related.

there was a mention of "Fixed certain startup movies not playing correctly" in the latest Deck beta client release notes, but it does not seem to apply to this specific issue.

Still experiencing this, I think, w/ latest SteamOS. That, or audio sounds way off on startup for some other reason...

I'll update if I find more helpful info., or will create a new issue if it's not the same as the above.

Have this issue right now. Either video lags and plays with delay after audio, or audio is doubled.

I'm also getting this on steam deck startup on stable and beta

I have the same issue on my Steam Deck. Just installed a bunch of custom boot videos, and because I was excited to see them I went into 'Customisation' and set it to ''Use as Wake Movie'. Unfortunately it usually plays doubled audio when I wake up my Deck, and it sounds terrible so I guess I'll turn that setting back off for now.

This is happening to me when I open Big Picture Mode on Windows. It's especially noticeable when using the OG Big Picture startup movie

Oh I thought the audio sounded wonky sometimes. So this is the reason.

Having the same issue with Big Picture Mode on Windows.

Still happens on windows

This happens to me frequently on windows, on all of my startup videos.

It’s been happening with the keyboard sound in console mode as well, but not in desktop mode. It seems to be a Gamescope/Big Picture issue rather than a Linux one.

In case it's a Big Picture issue, is anyone able to reproduce this with Big Picture on desktop?

Nothing extracted yet.
