Installing Steam from some places can cause problems, like ubuntu snap store, but i'm not 100% sure. There can be some issues running games, you will not get banned, don't worry.
Hello @Cyncrovee, in terms of support, Valve prefers handling problems that can be solved directly. Distro-modified Steam packaging adds a layer of maintainership by a third party and if there's problems with the modified Steam packages, those issues need to be resolved by the package maintainers.
Having written that, there's many flavors of Linux and the Valve-provided Steam package can't account for every scenario. Assuming there's no foul play, you shouldn't have account problems. Specific to Debian/Ubuntu flavors, there's also some alternative install instructions at https://repo.steampowered.com/steam/ for those who want to bootstrap the Valve-provided Steam package without the website download.

Though it does seem like those instructions might be outdated, as it seems like the libgl1-mesa-glx packages are no longer available in newer versions of Ubuntu (from the looks of it they may have been obsoleted as of Ubuntu 23.10), so you may want to update that if possible.

The Steam website shows only the .deb package for installing Steam. But I much prefer to install via a package manager, in my case (Kubuntu 24.10) apt. I just wanted to double check that Valve are okay with users using distro-provided versions of steam, and I wont get banned for installing from them.
