It would be great, after all, it's enabled by Default on the steamdeck.
It would also be fine if we had a prompt on the first run of steam in Linux asking if we want to enable that.
I agree
Hello @polluxau, my understanding is that support for running games with Proton is unofficial and unofficial options can't be enabled by default. The feature request at #7234 is a plausible way forward.
Closing in favor of the older feature request.
my understanding is that support for running games with Proton is unofficial and unofficial options can't be enabled by default.
That would also be true for the Steam Deck/SteamOS3, especially in cases where the game is marked Unsupported or Unknown for "Steam Deck Verified", but the Steam Deck/SteamOS3 rightly has steam play/proton enabled globally by default.
I think it'd be fine and consistent with Steam Deck/SteamOS3 to be enabled default across all Steam on Linux installs, but at least a popup/suggestion is warranted.

I also agree with this, I think it might be they don't want too much stress on developers and instead just want to game studios to target one device for now
But this is changing very soon with steamos going into public beta and steamos coming to the Lenovo legion go s device
So at some point this will be enabled by default

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:
At this point valve you have done an amazing job making windows games work on Linux through proton, I think it's time that you enable steam-play for all other titles by default on all steam Linux installs so a new user does not get confused on why they can't play their windows games ootb
You could enable steam-play by default using proton experimental or proton 9, which ever one you see fit
This will also decrease the amount of Reddit posts and YouTube comments on why I can't play my games on Linux lol
