This is a feature request.

Please support su as an alternative to sudo, preferrably as a config option, so nobody is left out in the cold.

Actually, on second thought: usually Steam wants sudo for running apt-get, right? If that's correct, the best solution would be to use something like libept or, if you prefer something more high-level, QApt (though QApt probably fits best into KDE and/or Qt projects) and be done with invoking su on an ugly xterm (anyway, why do we get gnome-terminal or xterm? Use the alternatives system of Debian/Ubuntu: x-terminal-emulator).

For other things you might need to do, that require privileged access, there is PolicyKit.

Feel free to interpret this bug in that direction, but in the short term offering su as an additional option would be much appreciated.

Why would a user friendly application like Steam open up a terminal and not appropriate GUI application to install dependencies? gpk-install-* suite of commands do the trick on my Fedora (eg. 'gpk-install-package-name SDL.i686' or 'gpk-install-provide-file /usr/lib/libSDL-1.2.so.0').
