Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): 1745269938
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): Fedora 41 (has also happened on Fedora 40 and potentially earlier) using WM awesomeWM
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: No, but has historically also happened with client beta
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes
  • Steam Logs: I'm gonna be honest, I don't know what logs would do here.
  • GPU: AMD RX 580

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Occasionally Steam will steal input from all other windows. Historically this has only happened when I have Steam maximized in the background with other windows on top, but since upgrading to Fedora 41 maybe 3 days ago, this has now also begun happening when the window is minimized, or closed to tray, which in the latter case makes me have to shut down Steam entirely to be able to type in other windows without issue.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

I don't know. It appears to just happen at random. Sometimes I can leave Steam maximized with other windows over it and it'll be fine, other times even minimizing it to tray does nothing. There seems to be little rhyme or reason to when it happens. It'll happen when I have only the main window open, or it'll happen when there's a notification window open sometimes, and on other occasions it'll be fine in those same circumstances. The only constant I can find is that I always have Steam in "normal mode" or whatever the proper term is for it (that is, not Big Picture mode or small mode) since I don't use the other modes. I also believe it has only ever happened while I've been using awesomeWM, though I don't know if this is directly an issue with using Steam on awesomeWM or if it just happened to arise specifically when I switched to awesomeWM (I guess I can check later).

I guess it's also worth nothing that I think this has happened over two unique installs of Fedora on the same computer, both times using awesomeWM. The previous one was built atop Fedora Workstation, my current setup is built on top of the generic all-purpose Fedora that doesn't even come with a desktop environment/WM by default.

I've been getting this inconsistently when the library tab is open on CachyOS KDE Wayland with a 9070xt for the past while (at least weeks, maybe a couple months? Not 100% sure). It seems to happen more when alt tabbing out of a game or after closing a game and the library tab pops up.

I usually notice it when I go to search in firefox and can't type anything into the address bar until I close the steam library window.

This also has been still happening to me on Arch with various WMs, including awesomeWM initially, but also now Wayland WMs like first Hyprland and now Niri.

Happens to me as well quite often, especially Steam's chat window. I'll have Steam Chat open on one monitor and will be unable to type in a browser on another monitor. I'm running EndeavourOS (Arch Linux more or less), on AwesomeWM as well.

This behavior is usually fixed by clicking on another window on the same monitor as Steam Chat or changing the tag (workspace essentially) on the Steam Chat monitor.

I'm on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and this happens regularly. Kernel version doesn't matter.

Nothing extracted yet.
