Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): 1747701111 (Stable)
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): Arch
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: Occurs in Both
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes
  • Steam Logs: steam-logs.tar.gz
  • GPU: AMD RX 7900 GRE

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Steam Big Picture does not open after changing any display settings. This only occurs if the resolution has been changed AFTER the steam client is started. Even if the client is not running and any display settings change, Big Picture mode will not start and freezes Steam until it is forced to quit.

It occurs if Big Picture mode is started using any method:

  • View > Big Picture Mode
  • steam://open/bigpicture
  • steam://open/gamepadui

If the display settings are changed prior to the first startup of Steam during one logged in session, this issue does not occur until the settings are modified again.

The issue persists even if the current Steam process is killed and a new process is started.

Additionally, this occurs whether changing display settings through the UI or through the terminal.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Start Steam
  2. Change display settings
  3. Attempt to start Big Picture

Yes i am getting this exact same issue,

I have reinstalled steam multiple times, tried flatpak and dnf steam and nothing works
i even went as far as installing steam on a fresh install of Fedora 42 and still nothing

Running AMD rx6600xt and ryzen 7 5700x
Fedora 42
Tried beta and non beta

pulling my hair out over this one,
seems to be steam web helper crashing which causes it

This seems to be caused by another package. Just updated the following packages:

  • mesa (1:25.1.1-1 -> 1:25.1.1-2)
  • webrtc-audio-processing-1 (1.3-4 -> 1.3-5)
  • libxkbcommon (1.9.2-1 -> 1.10.0-1)
  • libxkbcommon-x11 (1.9.2-1 -> 1.10.0-1)
  • libadwaita (1:1.7.3-1 -> 1:1.7.4-1)
  • js128 (128.10.1-1 -> 128.11.0-1)
  • lib32-libxkbcommon (1.9.2-1 -> 1.10.0-1)
  • lib32-mesa (1:25.1.1-1 -> 1:25.1.1-2)
  • vulkan-radeon (1:25.1.1-1 -> 1:25.1.1-2)
  • lib32-vulkan-radeon (1:25.1.1-1 -> 1:25.1.1-2)
  • libgexiv2 (0.14.3-2 -> 0.14.5-1)
  • mutter (48.3-1 -> 48.3-2)
  • sane (1.3.1-3 -> 1.4.0-1)
  • strace (6.14-1 -> 6.15-1)
  • vte-common (0.80.1-1 -> 0.80.2-1)
  • vte3 (0.80.1-1 -> 0.80.2-1)

and Big Picture works as expected. I don't think this is caused by anything on Steam's part, at this point. Not sure if @tomkyriacou64 issue is fixed with the same solution.

Thanks for letting me know @yelsew352
I've tried updating but still not working, guess I'll have to wait til fedora pushes an update

If there is anything else I can try let me know
