If you launch steam from a terminal and copy the output from running TF2 it would help.
(You can ignore TF2 beta for now, its not kept as up to date as TF2)
Normally a first run load of TF2 takes a while, subsequent loads will be much faster, make certain you’re not killing it early.
Here's the output from the console. Nothing abnormal as far as I can see.

Have launched TF2 several times on this machine and it's worked fine up until the little update that was downloaded today. Have waited 10+ minutes with no change.
strace shows the process hung on ppoll:
$ strace -p 16936

Looks like #1219 is (close to) the same issue. They're using AMD, I'm using nvidia, so that should rule out a driver inconsistency.
I have this issue as well, as of the last update.
Seems resolved as of today's Steam client update, which "fixes a number of problems on non-Ubuntu" (paraphrase). I have a functional tray icon too now. ;)
The update does not appear to have fixed the AMD systems from #1219. I just updated and have been stuck at the "Loading" page for 5 minutes.
I have the similar problem. In my case TF2 is succesfully launched, but it takes about 3 minutes.
I wrote about this in SteamCommunity Hub and Frank said, that they added this issue to known list.
Unfortunately I din't find our issue here. So, may be we have the same problems? =)
Nothing extracted yet.
Tried both TF2 and TF2 Beta after an update was downloaded today and neither makes it to the initial menu. The program launches and sits on Loading... forever. If I pkill hl2_linux, the menu appears briefly before the game exits. No error output is delivered to the console.
