Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

The on-screen keyboard fails to display the Input Method Editor (IME) when a key is pressed. Input is instead forwarded directly to the Steam client. This issue occurs for all keyboard layout which require an IME.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Ensure the appropriate ibus system package is installed for the active keyboard layout.
  2. Launch Steam.
  3. Connect a Gamepad.
  4. Select a text field.
  5. Press the Show Keyboard shortcut (Steam / Xbox + X or PS + Square or Home + Y).
  6. Press a key.

Affected Platforms

  • LCD / Jupiter: No
  • OLED / Galileo: No
  • Desktop Deck-like session (gamescope -e -- steam -gamepadui -steamdeck): Blocked. Deck-like session continues to show the error message even when the ibus package is installed.
  • Desktop: Yes (Desktop and Big Picture)

Actual result

  • IME is missing when using the on-screen keyboard with a layout which requires it.

Expected result

  • IME appears and receives input as soon as a key is pressed on a keyboard layout which requires it.
