Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): Fri, Jun 27 9:07 PM UTC -08:00
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): Fedora release 42 (Adams)
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: No
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes
  • Steam Logs: steam-logs.tar.gz
  • GPU: AMD RX 5700 XT

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

When attempting to use Steam Remote Play to stream a game from my Fedora desktop (host) to my Fedora laptop (client), the stream connection triggers a GNOME Remote Desktop security prompt on the host machine. The prompt requires me to physically approve the connection on the host before the client can gain control, which defeats the purpose of remote play.

I expected the stream to connect directly to the game without any desktop interaction on the host machine, as is the standard behavior for Steam Remote Play.

This issue occurs consistently despite extensive troubleshooting. The "Remote Play" settings section in the Steam client is greyed out and inaccessible.

The following steps have been attempted without resolving the issue:

  • Ensured steam-devices RPM package is installed.
  • Performed a clean re-installation of the Steam RPM.
  • Manually created the steam user group and added my user to it.
  • Tested on both the default GNOME (Wayland) session and a "GNOME on Xorg" session. The prompt appears in both.
  • Completely disabled the GNOME Sharing service (gnome-remote-desktop.service) via Settings and confirmed it is inactive. The prompt still appears.
  • Confirmed via ausearch that there are no SELinux AVC denials related to the issue.

This behavior suggests that the Steam client on Fedora is failing to use its dedicated streaming and input drivers, and is instead falling back to a generic screen sharing request that is being intercepted by a GNOME system service, even when the main sharing service is disabled.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. On a fully updated Fedora 42 Workstation installation with an AMD GPU, install Steam via the RPM Fusion repository.
  2. On a second computer (client), log into the same Steam account.
  3. From the client, attempt to start a Remote Play stream from a game installed on the host machine.
  4. Observe that a "Remote Connection" approval prompt appears on the host machine's desktop, blocking the stream until physically approved.
