Description:

Upon enabling or disabling a VPN connection while Steam is running (protonvpn client) Steam no longer has access to the Internet, can't browse the store or the forums, can't fetch game data such as achievements or achievement icons, etc. However I can still download.

If I wait long enough for a webpage to timeout I get the following error message:

Error Code: -105
Unable to connect to server. Server may be offline or you may not be connected to the internet.

This applies to games themselves, for example I use Mod Organizer 2 and if I initiate a VPN connection while it's running (through Steam) it no longer has access to NexusMods. I would have to re-launch the game/MO2 (no need to restart the Steam client for individual games to be able to reconnect). This could be a different issue, but it seems related so I'm mentioning it.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Enable a VPN connection
  2. Open Steam
  3. Disable the VPN connection
  4. Steam client loses access to the Internet for most of its functions (except Downloads) until restarted

Hello @Yasand123, this issue is already being tracked at #1943. Closing in favor of the older issue report.

@kisak-valve I could be wrong but I'm not sure if it's the same issue. I CAN connect through a VPN I just need to restart Steam. The problem isn't that Steam has no access to the Internet through a VPN connection, the issue is that I need to restart it every time I change the IP.

I understood what you wrote, the larger topic of support for this type of network configuration needs to be addressed before secondary, transitional issues should be evaluated.

Just needed to be sure. Have a good day.
