have you tried forcing steam input for the games that you are having issues with? are you on a wayland or xorg session? wayland sessions in my experience with the steam controller (v1 ofc) have been that i have had to in past use the following project: https://github.com/Supreeeme/extest to get it to be reliable outside of the steam client. in modern steam clients when you have a controller turned on it lists support info inside of the page in the library, and also when you right click to enable steam input you see a blue dot, see if you see this with your xbox controller detected, it could be that steam is not correctly picking up your controller, which if i had to guess would be udev rule related? i sadly do not have xbox controllers nowadays so i cant confirm this as an absolute.
The xbox controller works with the steam in game menu but not the game itself. And when complaining about this to steam support they use fake names that don't match real valve employees so that they don't face the valve official firing squad. The solution is to fire adil sardar and every other indian valve employee.
also having this issue except on a worse scale
tried installing extest to no avail, running Kubuntu 25.10
I want you to look at these help tickets
HT-38GV-9DNJ-76P2
HT-DKM6-3DN9-HMNV
HT-DTN3-H6K7-K4P9
Giving off some fired valve employee aura right here, absolutely none of the names listed in the tickets are actual valve employees and i used https://www.valvesoftware.com/en/people search function to check.
EDIT: the newest response to help ticket HT-DQMX-62QW-R836 goes by "alex" and with that I assume he is alexander mark a valve 3D animator that used to work at walt disney studios. I don't know if that has anything to do with computer science programming but I am guessing a majority of valve employees would tell if it's relevant.
Update: the recent ticket was closed without my permission by "lucio" a name that matches an overwatch character and not a real valve employee
The xbox one controller is still unplayable. Please report this to gabe newell and fire him.
I submitted a new ticket in response to the deleted one HT-3G2V-YM3J-R5G7.
I predict someone will use a name that doesn't match a real valve employee and will proceed to close it without my permission. He is probably going to call himself "lucio" when in all liklihood is just some indian employee. And somehow he will not get fired for it.
facing same issue on arch linux
My last comment was hidden so I will reiterate here. My prediction for my next help ticket will turn out is that they will use a fake alias as a name, refuse to fix the given problem and then close the ticket without my permission. He will pretend to be some white person.
Look at help ticket: HT-3G2V-YM3J-R5G7
He used a fake valve employee name.
He told me to do something I already did.
He refuses to fix the controller problem.
And a 4 day delay he lied about the functionality of the xbox one controller, used a fake valve employee name and then closed the thread without my permission. He died everything I predicted. I can prove these are lies because you can see very clearly I have 59 hours of devil may cry 5 where the controller worked perfectly and what really happened is someone at valve sabotaged some code for it.
Please fire him
As an additional note Ready or Not is now unplayable, this was supposed to have been fixed a long time ago. I can't find the ticket but you can see my steam account and therefore ticket history. I talked about ready or not it was supposed to have been fixed but it has clearly been re-sabotaged. Steam says it's running but I don't see the game appear at all and then it ends unexpectedly.

have you tried using xpadneo? it fixed my problem with the controller atleast
The ready or not exe won't launch, that's the problem. There are valve employees who have beef with me and have not been fired for it.
Hello @warriorman8, consider this your only warning, your demands for any Valve dev who interacts with you to be fired is hostile, abusive, and non-constructive. If you choose to continue, you will be blocked from using this issue tracker.
Why do you use fake names in the steam reports?
on arch linux, issue got resolved for me after installing xpadneo-dkms (yay -S xpadneo-dkms --rebuild) . so this was a system driver issue and not a steam specific issue.
made a new ticket: HT-3GN3-N4CR-FD8D
The responder called himself "masa" (not a real valve employee)
Update: lucio has struck again and closed the thread without my permission. (I don't like overwatch)
This thread has been open for a month. I am asking the higher ups at valve to take decisive action and when I say higher-ups I mean gabe newell.
Creating a new ticket: HT-3376-859P-K4KQ
There is also this brand new bug in which I press "launch" on a game and it would initially not launch but I press again and it does.
UPDATE: steam support valve employee "william" is not a real person.
UPDATE 2: steam support employee has come out of the closet and transitioned genders and is now "rebecca" who is also not a real valve.
Hello again @warriorman8, your choice to continue with your hostile remarks has resulted in being blocked from this issue tracker. Behavior like this is unacceptable.
Nothing extracted yet.
Your system information
tar -zcvf ~/Desktop/steam-logs.tar.gz ~/.steam/steam/logs]Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:
The xbox one controller doesn't work in for example Devil may cry 5. It works in the steam interface but not the game itself. There was an attempt at reporting the problem to valve support but the people responding refused to fix it and would use aliases that do not match actual valve employes such as "lucio" and "kelson". I honestly suspect these are indians sabotaging my attempt at playing games on linux.
