This is my first issue submitted so I hope I do this correctly - just hoping to bring some light to an issue I can see some people looking for solutions.

As it stands currently, Steam Link on Linux (my specific distribution is CachyOS) is not able to be run "headless" or without a monitor plugged in. There are scenarios where I would like to stream games from my computer to my phone or VR games to my Quest 3 (soon to be Steam Frame) where having the monitors off would be a blessing.

A few thoughtful scenarios where this feature would be a benefit for users:

  • Playing a game on your phone and not having a larger screen blasting light in the other room and waking people up
  • Having two computers (PC and Laptop) on a KVM and, while on the laptop, being able to stream from the PC without an active monitor
  • Steam Frame/VR streaming where you want a truly "PC-less" environment where a computer after configuration isn't accessed frequently.
  • Playing games with content that isn't appropriate for children to see and to have further privacy.
  • Accidentally turning off monitors before leaving the house, trying to login to Steam Link and finding that your computer is down and you can't stream at all.
  • Those of us with homelabs that have a powerful GPU in a rack mounted PC and would like to play from our TV/phone/Steam Deck around the house.
  • And many more

I would love to see a feature where Steam Link can be accessed in this way, on a "headless" system without any monitor plugged in.
