The retail edition of Half-Life used high quality CD-Audio. The Steam version uses mp3 files that have been compressed to the extreme and sound noticeably inferior. This can be confirmed by analyzing the files in "~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Half-Life/valve/media." They have been compressed to 48Kb/s, 22KHz for some reason.

(For those who want high quality mp3s now, someone already extracted them from the cd and put them here: http://www.gamefront.com/files/Half+Life+Hi+Quality+MP3+Pack/;4031488;/fileinfo.html)

+1 maybe this should be an option (like HD modles) for people low on disk space

I'd love better mp3s.

+1 here as well. Been hoping Valve would do this for years now. =D

I see that Half-life has its own tracker now. Moving there: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/halflife/issues/449

Nothing extracted yet.
