there is a warning on steam saying that recording only game audio is not supported on the linux platform, so i guess this is more of a feature request than a bug report.
I would also very much appreciate the ability to select the audio stream being recorded. I have all my audio going through EasyEffects, which means that Steam ends up recording the filtered audio.

When enabling the steam background recording to record games in the background steam simply records desktop audio too, on windows it does not do the same so i think this is unexpected behavior
