Your system information

  • Steam client version: 1778003620 (built May 5 2026)
  • Distribution: MX Linux 25.1 64-bit
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: Both crash
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes
  • Steam Logs: [attached]
  • GPU: NVidia 3090, driver 580.142
  • Kernel version: 6.12.74+deb13+1-amd64

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Steam segfaults immediately on launch under KDE Wayland (wayland-0). The crash occurs consistently on both the stable client and the beta client, both of which are on build 1778003620 (released May 5 2026). The process dies at steam.sh line 966 with a segmentation fault.

Two XOpenIM() failed errors are printed before the crash, followed by the segfault. The client never reaches the GUI and segfaults within 2 seconds.

Expected: Steam launches normally under KDE Wayland as it did prior to today's update.
Actual: Immediate segfault every launch.

Terminal output:

XOpenIM() failed, LANG = en_US.UTF-8
XOpenIM() failed, LANG = en_US.UTF-8
XRRGetOutputInfo Workaround: initialized with override: 0 real: 0xf6086370
XRRGetCrtcInfo Workaround: initialized with override: 0 real: 0xf6084cc0
~/.steam/debian-installation/steam.sh: line 966: 441518 Segmentation fault      "$STEAMROOT/$STEAMEXEPATH" "$@"

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Run KDE Plasma on Wayland (WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-0)
  2. Launch Steam via terminal
  3. Steam segfaults before reaching the main window

Workarounds attempted (none successful):

  • SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11 steam
  • STEAM_DISABLE_WAYLAND=1 steam
  • steam -noverifyfiles -nobootstrapupdate
  • Steam beta client (same build, same crash)

similar issue, except the program doesn't return segfault and only crashes. you should try downgrading: https://blog.lightwo.net/steam-client-downgrades-survival-kit.html

A hard reinstall and reboot resolved it for me, though I'm not actually sure what the change was that made it work again. Up to the maintainers to close since it seems like an issue nonetheless because it's a segfault.
