Whenever i get a notification in big picture mode, it always has a black border around them. I have tried multiple things to try and make it not happen but none of them worked.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Run steam in big picture
  2. receive a notification

Same error. Related to Xwayland. Not present on an X11 environment.

That means steam doesn't have GPU acceleration enabled so it can't do alpha aware compositing.

It's enabled in both scenarios.

I had the same symptom - Big Picture notifications drawn on top of opaque black
rectangles instead of being alpha-blended. Happened both in desktop Big Picture (KDE
Plasma Wayland) and in gamescope-session, on AMD (RX 7900 XTX, RADV, Mesa 26.1.5, CachyOS).

After many permutations of configs was able to fix it on my system:

Fix: Settings → Developer -> Force system browser composer -> OFF & restart steam.

Happening for me as well in big picture at least (RX 9060 XT, KDE Plasma Wayland)

Nothing extracted yet.
