Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Downloading/updating Sid Meier's Civilization V (appid 8930), Windows depot (depot 8931 and others, e.g. 16860), consistently fails partway through with a "Disk write error" popup in the Steam client.

Expected: the depot downloads and installs completely, as it always has until a few days ago (this exact installation was working fine as recently as July 22).

What actually happens: the download fails deterministically, always on the first write into a newly-created subfolder (different folder/file each attempt — e.g. Resource/DX9_Low/, then assets/Gameplay/XML/NewText/en_US/, then assets/Maps/). The content log shows:
