DO NOT try to install a new version over an old one. Follow the Removing the Driver section below to remove your existing driver.

Steam looks for the best / latest proprietary drivers from the local package manager, and shows the user a message if there is an action to take. The message you're seeing means your local package manager has no proprietary drivers for Steam to recommend. Is this showing when you start Steam? If so, we'll change it to show only when you specifically select Steam->Check for Video Driver Updates.

I also have this problem, I have manually installed the 12.10 driver from the AMD website and not from package manager because the version in package manager is not recent enough to support my video card.
The driver works well and I have full graphics acceleration and the games work well aswell, but Steam pops up with this message all the time, which is annoying because I do have the latest driver, which is even more recent than the ubuntu one, so either Steam should shut up about it, or it should look for the real driver version instead of the package version. ;)

Fixed in next release. It won't show when you start in the new release. It will show if you manually select "Check Video Driver Updates". It means Steam could not find drivers in the package manager.
When I start Steam, I ALWAYS get a message: "Your system is running older proprietary nVidia video drivers. Steam requires driver version 304.22 or higher.", but my video card(FX 5200) CAN NOT run the newest driver, only an old version. I don't want to play any "big" games, that require good graphics cards, and I know, my video card CAN run TF2, Portal, HL2 & MC, and I don't need more. I just want to use Steam under Ubuntu. When I tried to use it under WinXP, there wasn't any problems. Can I fix it or I can play only under WinXP?

I have Steam installed on Ubuntu 12.04, I also installed the AMD driver 12.10 from terminal, all ok but when I open the program, a window appears that says: "Steam could not find recommended video driver packages on your system."
