Remote Play streaming_client crashes immediately (SIGSEGV in eglGetDisplay, hooked by gameoverlayrenderer.so) — Remote Play Together never starts, host or client
System info
Distro: CachyOS Linux (Arch-based), kernel 7.2.3-1-cachyos
Desktop: KDE Plasma 6.7.5, reproduced on both native Wayland and with SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11 forcing XWayland
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti
Driver: proprietary nvidia 610.57.04 (kernel modules nvidia, nvidia_drm, nvidia_modeset, nvidia_uvm; nouveau not bound)
Steam client buildid: 1788652215
EGL vendor config present and correct (/usr/share/glvnd/egl_vendor.d/10_nvidia.json, 50_mesa.json), single correct render node (/dev/dri/renderD128 → PCI 01:00.0, the NVIDIA GPU)
What happens
Steam Remote Play Together fails 100% of the time — both when this machine is the host and when it is the joining client. Every attempt launches streaming_client, which crashes with SIGSEGV within 2–16 seconds, before any video/audio is ever displayed to either side. From the accepting side, this presents as "accept the invite, then nothing happens."
Reproduced with two different target apps (one Steam-owned game, one Remote-Play-Together-shared title), so it isn't specific to a particular game.
streaming_client dynamically loads Steam's own bundledlibSDL3.so.0 (ubuntu12_64/libSDL3.so.0), not the distro's system SDL3 package, so this isn't a system-library version mismatch on my end.
This is consistently preceded by an EGL init failure in Steam's desktop capture path, which may or may not be related:
Not a Wayland-vs-X11 issue — identical crash with SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11 forcing XWayland.
Not the user-facing Overlay toggle — disabling "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game" (Settings → In-Game) has no effect, since streaming_client is one of Steam's own internal binaries and always gets gameoverlayrenderer.so injected regardless of that setting.
Not a beta-channel regression — reproduced after opting fully out of the client beta.
Not a driver/EGL install problem — libglvnd, egl-wayland, correct GLVND vendor JSON, and the correct single render node are all present and correctly configured; other EGL/Vulkan apps (games via Proton, desktop compositor) work fine on this system.
Not game-specific — reproduced hosting one Steam-owned title and again as the client joining a friend hosting a different (Remote-Play-Together-shared) title.
Repro steps
On a system with an NVIDIA GPU (610.57.04 proprietary driver) running KDE Plasma (Wayland or XWayland), start any game and either:
Host a Remote Play Together session and have a friend join, or
Accept a Remote Play Together invite from a friend hosting a game.
streaming_client launches and crashes within seconds; no video ever appears on either end.
Expected behavior
streaming_client should initialize an EGL/graphics context successfully and display the Remote Play video stream.
