My keyboard is has a Belgian layout (AZERTY). In TF2, the game always thinks I'm using a QWERTY keyboard. This happens while running around and playing, and also in the menus when trying to set the keys.

Interesting to note: in-game chat is not affected and correctly finds my Belgian keyboard layout.

This problem occured for me both on Ubuntu 12.10 and on Sabayon

I use DVORAK and am facing similar issues; the game still thinks I am using QWERTY.

Ubuntu 12.10 with gome-shell.

I have the same issues on both of my computers.

Ubuntu 12.10, with Unity, Gnome Classic, Cinnamon.

Same problem with de-neo keyboard layout

Arch Linux, KDE

Same, dvorak user here.

The issue is that my tf2 bindings (synced to steam cloud) need to be changed when i switch between windows and linux. Although I use dvorak in both environments, windows and linux tf2 have different ideas of how to interpret the keys.

Can confirm with Ubuntu 12.10, dvorak and TF2. The game will for example say «press 'j' to accept or 'k' to reject», but I have no clue as to where those keys actually are on my keyboard. Typing in the chat works, though.

I use the german NEO layout on a keyboard which has the german QWERTZ layout printed on the keys. For chat and the console the NEO layout is used. For the game controls the US QWERTY layout is used.
This is exactly what I want the game to handle the keyboard. So I get the fast 10-finger writing I'm accustomed to when I want to write longer texts and can press the keys corresponding to the markings (except for the y-z swap and some special chars) on them when I just press single keys. If the controls also used the NEO layout, I would have to change the keyboard settings ingame and hope that the keys returning ü,ö,ä work correctly (they often do not work in games and on NEO layout they are placed on keys that are important for games with asdw control). Furthermore the key prints would no longer more or less match what the game tells me to press.
For Half Live Beta it was changed from using the keyboard layout to using the keycodes (and assuming US layout) in one of the first updates. So what you think is a bug is thought of as a feature by valve (and I also think so).

It's a bug, it's going to be fixed on HL1 with the next update, as alfred said.
On TF2 it's only happening on Linux, it works fine on Windows.

Having the same problem with Dvorak on Arch. This has rendered all my binds cfg's useless for the moment.
