I've also got this problem on Fedora 17 x64. It's strange, because I'm pretty sure that I got sound a few weeks ago.
Here is the errors I'm getting:

It seems to be an ALSA related error.

Does setting export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulseaudio before loading steam fix this?
Nope.
I've tried, and I still got this:
Failed to load installscript /home/fedoski/MySteam/SteamApps/common/Space Pirates and Zombies/installscript.vdf

I've noted that:
locate libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so
/home/fedoski/MySteam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so

/home/fedoski/bin/jeux/shadowgrounds/lib32/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so
/usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so
/usr/lib64/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so
So maybe, it's just the game not looking at the right place on Fedora systems.
Looks like a possible runtime issue, maybe @slouken can answer.
I had a similar problem on Fedora 16 64-bit, related to the error message:
ALSA lib dlmisc.c:270:(snd1_dlobj_cache_get) Cannot open shared library /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so
This effected flash audio only (steam client (e.g. game previews) and at least one game (The Clockwork Man 2 Demo)
The path "/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/" does not exist on F16 but libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so does exist at /usr/lib/alsa-lib/
To fix this I did the following:
$ sudo mkdir /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu
$ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/alsa-lib /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/
This is just a work-around, of course, but it got me up & running.
Hope that helps...
It looks like the problem is the version of OpenAL included with SPAZ. Please undo your workaround and try the following:
cd "$HOME/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/Space Pirates and Zombies"
mkdir bad
mv libSDL-1.2.so.0 libopenal.so bad/
Then try launching the game.
I've tried it and it did not worked, even if there was no error messages.
But I made a copy of libSDL-1.2.so.0 and libopenal.so from /usr/bin into the game directory, and now, I have sound.
For Fedora 18 this solution worked (might work for Fedora 17 as well):
cd /<steam directory>/SteamApps/common/Space\ Pirates\ and\ Zombies/
mv libopenal.so libopenal.so.bak
ln -s /usr/lib/libopenal.so.1 libopenal.so
Okay, I figured this out and we have a fix coming for the next update. Thanks!
Got the same problem in ubuntu 12.04 x64. It worked at one point but now it's no longer working. Nothing changed on my end...
Don't have an error message when launching the game either.
for Ubuntu 12.06 x86, I've fix same problem by:
ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libopenal.so.1 libopenal.so
in root of the game
method posted by @paxapy works
Small correction to @paxapy - the command is:
ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libopenal.so.1 libopenal.so
Typo - 'o' is necessary on the end.
And to clarify, the root of the game is:
~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/Space Pirates and Zombies
Not necessarily. Some of us might have moved the install dir. Just be careful.
SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulseaudio`x1 2013-02
see this thread
this what i have installed:
I also have this:
questions is it using /Space Pirates and Zombies/libopenal.so version or system's?
