I would love to, but I can't copy info from "Help > System Information" cause ctrl+c (or ctrl+a) does nothing and when I right click I have no menu (I guess I should file a bug report... meh). Updated info, should I add anything else?
I think, I am not 100% sure but I think that's just wine. I remember wine always having very small fonts anyway.
Tbh I don't have Windows anywhere near me to check, but if that's true, then this would become feature request instead of bug report :)
Steam uses system fonts so it's expected that different platforms will not look exactly the same. There are various sources of Windows font files that you can install on Linux and doing so may get things closer to Windows (Arial is the primary font used in the UI).
Ok, trying to mess around with "steam.styles", but it does nothing, cause Steam reverts all changes at start (updates itself and file is in default state again). Any fix? Changing file permissions doesn't help.
EDIT: Nevermind, silly me... Just found info how to make my own skin in skins folder, thanks for help :)
I can confirm that, on my desktop at 1080P seems ok,
But in my netbook which have 1024x600 seems wrong.
The letters override each other, and the full windows can't even be maximized in the screen cause don't fit.
It really depends on the fonts you've got installed. I've got Liberation fonts (free replacement for arial) and it looks exactly the same as on your "Steam for Windows" screenshot (at least in terms of formating like boldness etc).
Nuc1eoN, it doesn't look exactly the same. Fonts weight seems to be much better with liberation, but fonts are still too big in comparison to those under Windows. Tbh changing fonts size manually for every single Steam component (with Steam.styles) is not a perfect solution imo.
IMO it looks better. However I'm sure if I installed Arial fonts instead of Liberation it would look the same.
Regardless of whether it looks better or not, it's different; I have every truetype font from my windows installation installed under xubuntu, and changing my dpi settings via fontconfig doesn't change the size of the fonts in Steam whatsoever. As well, it doesn't seem to be using subpixel AA like the rest of the text in my OS is (though I can't check to be certain). This behavior is inconsistent with the original behavior of steam under Windows as well as inconsistent with the OS settings. Does Steam use a font rendering lib that doesn't work the same way as freetype?
Steam uses freetype, but it's not rendering directly to the screen.
This is a big deal. The text has all kinds of issues. The sizes and weights are different between operating systems, on linux the text is often cut-off due to being larger and the font behaviour is not configurable in Steam or the OS.
You know that custom font they use on their new community pages and also I think Big Picture Mode? Motiva Sans? They should just redesign the client to use that on all platforms. Problem solved.
I'm affected also. Font is just making me cry.
While system font look pretty only steam ones are bad. Feels like oversized by multiplier directly in code.
It's not only steam's issue in general. I'm pretty sure player names over heroes in dota are also a bit too large comparing to windows. Might there be some forced DPI involved or the way X.org font rendering libs work is the reason?
So far I'm just editing the skins to make it look at least close to windows version, but it's a serious issue.
This thread could use some actual screenshots. Since ubuntuone is down. Here is my example with steam running on wine in front and native one in the back. Font size difference may not be that huge, but it is quite noticeable.
It's probably down to the differences between whatever built-in Arial knockoff they're forced to use in Linux and Arial itself. What I don't get is why they couldn't switch to that custom font the store and Big Picture Mode use. I forget its name.
Same happens to the skin that goes with its own font. Not to mention that I have windows fonts installed on every machine I use.
I also use font related packages with ubuntu patches, so font is rendered the same way it is in ubuntu.
Steam has gone through so many redesigns that I'm going to assume this is no longer relevant.
Closing as outdated.
Nothing extracted yet.
Steam for Linux fonts looks out of place, too big and not bolded.
