I have precisely the same issue. Arch Linux x86_64 here.
Run 'STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam' from a terminal and it should work. The last time this happened another update fixed it.
Just fixed this on F17 x86_64 by disabling the steam runtime and installing libXdmcp.i686. You may need to install more stuff, but this was all I needed in my case.
STEAM_RUNTIME=0 ./steam.sh should do it.
In my case I didn't have to change anything apart from the runtime export.
In the interests of completeness - this is my output.

Is there a way to disable the STEAM_RUNTIME by default?, first thing I tried was reinstalling the client, so I'm now running steam with the STEAM_RUNTIME disabled but I get the update prompt from steam, it decompresses it and then runs steam for the first time, but it enables the STEAM_RUNTIME again.
Thanks for your prompt responses.
You can add 'export STEAM_RUNTIME=0' to /usr/bin/steam (it's just a shell script) and it does work. Not sure if that's the best way but in lieu of an official fix it'll get you playing.
Yep I was just trying that and just got a new steam client update and it seems to work fine again now.
Thanks
I'm having the same problem in Arch Linux i686. Should this be fixed even though there is only a workaround?
@hagabaka @flibitijibibo did the update a few hours ago fix this without needing the runtime=0 workaround?
Yeah, seems fine now.
what update? still crashing on me
using archlinux 64bit
I have the client working and most of the games, but CS: Source and TF2 got the issue with the server browser again..
"Steam client beta must be running to make use of find servers"
@johndrinkwater I have no update, and still have to disable runtime.
Have you chaps looked at the link I posted? Solved the issue for me until
the next update comes along.

@SulmanJT I saw it, but since I can already workaround the bug, I'm just waiting for an official update to fix it.
Sure, I thought it was particularly useful as it allows one to run Steam
with the runtime (the fix is just some library files) but the author said
same will be implemented in a future update.

Would people on Arch look at this fix https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/1468#issuecomment-13329033 and give feedback on that bug please.
The update is live, thanks!
System information:
Fedora 17 x86_64
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
4 GB RAM
AMD HD 6870 (Catalyst 13.2 beta drivers)
Output of running steam from the terminal:
It was working perfectly before last client update.
Appreciate any comments or suggestions.
Thanks.
