I download steam and then start it (using steam on terminal) I get the following console outputs depending how I start steam (you'll have to excuse my technique, I've never started steam in Ubuntu 10.04 before).

I will only have this laptop for the rest of the weekend before returning so if anyone else is out there with this POS, could you confirm and follow up for me if it takes longer than the weekend to fix?

Thanks for the quick reply, here's some h/w soft stats

Intel Core i7 3610QM 2.3 GHz
6 GB DDR3
750 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive
17.3-Inch Screen, Windows 8 (completely removed though of course)
Video Graphics - 2GB GDDR5AMD Radeon HD7970M

All I know about the software is:

Edit: Ubuntu 12.04 32bit (10.12 wouldn't even install)

I think I've made some progress though, I just recently went to
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx
...and ran that (I had to use the --force option to overwrite, because it's unclear how to remove the other ATI garbage that got installed on the system more or less automatically)

Now I actually see the login screen which is great (although the Ubuntu login screen looks really glitched out since force upgrading the display drivers).

I still consider this an issue, that the 'stock' drivers produce in an inoperable steam client. And I'm willing to revert my drivers or fresh install if it helps to fix this issue.

TTele42 2013-02-09 github

There should be no expectation for opensource ati drivers from two and a half years ago to work with steam, the amount of progress made to the opensource ati driver in that time is considerable and they can't future-proof that far with the amount of manpower available.

TTheNotary 2013-02-09 github

By "stock" drivers, I'm referring to those experimental ones that randomly show up the the "drivers" dialog. It looks like steam is recommending that I switch back to what I had going before when it wouldn't boot which feels like a red flag.

Jjohndrinkwater 2013-02-09 github

Steam is targeting Ubuntu 12.04 (and similarly recent distros) with stable-yet-beta graphics drivers that have been published within the last 6 months; I understand that you would like this to work on your system, but its an unsupported configuration.
also, you should not need to run steam through sudo or gksu, it is happy to run as your current user.

TTheNotary 2013-02-09 github

Oops, that was a typo, I'm running 12.04, I must have mis-sharpied this installation CD. This is a brand new installation, i'm actually really unattached to this installation right now, I don't even have any of my hotkeys or browser configs implemented yet.

Jjohndrinkwater 2013-02-09 github

Hmm, ok then.
Does 3d work for you? Does glxgears show animating gears.
Have you updated your system recently? sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade will make sure all your libraries are up to date.

TTheNotary 2013-02-09 github

Just installed mesa-utils and the gears show up (in the forced install of the drivers DLed straight from ATI's website). Give me a sec to switch to the experimental ones in the "drivers" dialog.

TTheNotary 2013-02-09 github

also, is there a cmd line to launch the games "library" from the console? Using the direct DLed drivers, I can get as far as to the fiends list, but I can't switch to the games because it complains something about an "engine" is already running.

Something like steam steam://library or something?

TTheNotary 2013-02-09 github

ok, I tried to switch back to the failing driver but I'm not able to reproduce the error for launching steam. Is it a part of the normal installation procedure that people download files straight from the GPU manufacturer’s web site? I kinda jumped into this before I found a very detailed guide. Otherwise I could do a fresh Ubuntu install and probably reproduce the problem.

Btw, now that I've used gksu a couple times, steam crashes if I try to launch steam without root. I tried chowning everything in ~/.local but same result. This should probably go in a seperate issue, but giving that my system isn't very compatibly with the latest steam I'll just mention it here.

Should this bug be closed, then?

TTheNotary 2013-02-09 github

It can be closed as long as the standard installation procedure includes instructing the user to go to ati.com / nvidia.com and telling them to DL the latest driver package. Simply going through the "drivers" dialog and DLing the experimental/ alternatives didn't work until I went online and manually grabbed AMD catalyst 13.1 from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx

Ggdrewb-valve maintainer 2013-02-09 github

The need for an up-to-date driver is mentioned in the info on the client, plus the Steam client does a driver check on startup (which of course wouldn't help if Steam doesn't start).

TTheNotary 2013-02-09 github

Agreed, close this issue. I'll complain at the "steam on linux" tutorial I got to from google for not linking to the github repo.
