Played the "Training Room" mission first, and then played "Hard" through to the Office Complex level with no problems at all.

However when I then tried to select "New Game" I ran into two show stoppers. First, the training room mission cannot be completed because the "Jump Pack" is missing from it's stand just before the big jump training. Second, the main game cannot be played because at a certain point in the introductory train journey there is a door that fails to open and the train becomes stuck. Both bugs completely thwart further progress in the game.

Try deleting the *.HL? files from the SAVE/ folder and see if that helps.

I deleted all of the *.HL? files from ~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/Half-Life/valve/SAVE
The problems outlined above continue to occur. Also I get the attached dialog box when launching the game. After dismissing the dialog the game loads as normal. Have tried launching several times and get the same dialog each time.

Heh, steam is putting the files back. Launch the game, delete the files, quit the game and launch again. You should not have the above dialog with that pattern. Either that or wait for the update later today containing this fix.
