I'm running Debian Unstable, x86_64, and as of this week, I can't run steam. Last week, I had no issues, but this week it just segfaults on me after the 'logging in as robbiethe1st' screen.
Here's what it looks like:

robbiethe1st@rb-deb-dt:/media/linuxGaming$ steam

Now, I've tried a few things:

  1. Upgrading all of my packages - libc6 is the latest from Debian Experimental(2.17), and the Nvidia drivers are the 313.18 one from the same place. Everything else is from the Debian Unstable repos.
  2. Reinstalling steam from scratch. I moved my Steam directory, then started Steam. It asked if I moved it or wanted to redownload. After picking redownload, it downloaded a good 200mb, installed it, and asked me to login. After logging in, the Steam window appeared(!), but after exiting and attempting to restart the problem remained.
  3. Reinstalling /completely/ from scratch - I deleted ~/.steam as well, and redownloaded etc. I tried having it not remember my username/password, but it still crashed on the second(or more) launch, after entering my password.

Anything else I can test, any more info needed?

Thanks for reporting. CrashID is present, so we'll take a look tomorrow morning.

That CrashID had no content for some reason. Can you please generate some more CrashIDs for me to look at?
Thanks.

OK, here's a few(generated now):
Just running "steam":

roaming config store loaded successfully - 1652 bytes.

Here's with "STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam":

roaming config store loaded successfully - 1652 bytes.

/tmp/dumps/crash_20130211130841_1.dmp

Here's a tarball of:

  1. The two above .dmp files(yes, they seem mostly empty when viewed with a hex editor)
  2. My ClientRegistry.blob file
  3. My /tmp/dumps/log.txt file(seems to have a bunch of CrashIDs and such
  4. My steamDir/steam.log file.

Hopefully that'll help.

BTW, lets see, any more information that might be needed?
I'm running KDE 4.8.4 as a desktop manager. I've tried launching with compositing on and off; no change.

'uname -a':

robbiethe1st@rb-deb-dt:~/Scripts$ uname -a
Linux rb-deb-dt 3.7.0-6.dmz.2-liquorix-amd64 #1 ZEN SMP PREEMPT Fri Feb 8 06:51:08 UTC 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux

What else?
Processor is an AMD Phenom II X4 955(3.2GHZ)
Ram wise, I've got 16GB DDR3-1600 in here; all fully tested as stable(have had /no/ crashes in the last month at least).
HD wise, my Steam files are traditionally kept on an OCZ Vector drive, mounted at /media/linuxGaming.
GPU wise, Nvidia GTX 560 with the above drivers.

Anything else? Just let me know.

Awesome, thank you. I'll take a look at this info.

Need the url to the tarball :)

Anything special about your setup? Those two CrashIDs were empty too unfortunately.

Oh, er, uh... Fixed now! (It's http://robbiethe1st.afraid.org/files/robbiethe1st_steamcrashstuff.tar.gz in case you missed it).
As far as being 'empty'.. Hm, I don't know. Every single crash I've seen of Steam has been like this, even before this current set of crashes.
I can't think of anything /weird/ with my system, but I can check anything you want.
These dump files, what generates them? Is there some -dev package or dump module or something that might need to be loaded?
I am running the Liquorix kernel( http://liquorix.net/ ), but it seems to be fairly stock and works without issues for me.
Also, my /tmp/ folder is on a 'tmpfs' ramdisk partition, but the fact that those .dmp files exist in the first place seem to indicate that the folder is writable etc.

Fixed. Let steam update on this computer tonight, worked fine.

Nothing extracted yet.
