I am trying to start a voice call with a friend who is on Windows 7. I get the ringing noise when I ring him but he sees nothing appear in the chat window. The same thing happens the other way round also.

I am using 12.04 with all updates applied as of 20/12/2012.

Are you able to use voice chat at all? Thanks.

Ddocapotamus 2012-12-21 github

Hi, no not at all. I only have a couple of people to test with but the same thing happens.

Do you also have Win7? If so would you try a voice call with Steam on Win7? I'd like to rule out networking as a potential issue. Thanks.

Ddocapotamus 2012-12-24 github

Hi Scott, I will have to run it in a VM but I will try after the holidays to check. I thought it may be networking but can not find anything in firewall config which would stop this. Is there any specific ports I need to open up?

Voice chat between Linux and WIndows does work, but of course there are a number of configuration items that might interfere. The voice support can generally get through but there are some situations where it can't. Have you ever chatted successfully from the machine? Do you switch between Windows and Linux on it, and if so does voice chat from Windows work? Are you behind a proxy of any kind?

The ports that Steam uses are detailed here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8571-GLVN-8711.
