It starts up correctly for me, so it's likely it's something in your configuration, such as your video driver. If you disable the community overlay in the game properties does that help?
I'm showing problems trying to start this game too, also on Intel. It takes forever to do anything after clicking Play, before throwing a Steam Cloud sync error, then eventually vomits into the console:

Does it work better if you disable community overlay in the game properties before starting>
Like I said, I already disabled the overlay, and it doesn't make a difference.
Sorry, I missed the comment in the middle of your post. With the overlay off Steam is mostly out of the way, so this is likely an issue between the game and the video driver. You might try contacting the game developer and see if they can localize the crash.
I have the same issue with this and iBomber, both Unity games. Intel Graphics.
Edit: Apparently not Unity games.
I'm reasonably sure neither of those are Unity3D games. Anomaly Warzone Earth is an in-house engine called "Liquid", and iBomber Attack's engine is called "Zufflin"
There are a number of existing iBomber issues, do a search. For example, #146 sounds similar.
I also have the same issue. It seams to be related to the Intel graphics driver. When I run the game using primusrun (under the dedicated nvidia card) it starts normally.
I'll also echo calind's comment that it is an Intel issue and works on the same install when using the Nvidia graphics vs Intel on hardware with GPU switching.
I'm not sure if this bug is even related to this one, but I and this other guy debugged and fixed a bug in SFML2.0 regarding shaders and FBO's, where if you do not reuse X window contexts the applications would act very sketchy and unpredictable. Sometimes it just simply didn't work, silently. Sometimes it didn't work and you got a "intel do_flush somethingsomething"-error. Other times you got a segfault after some GL-commands were flushed(manually or automatically). The nature and severity of this bug (it is found in many other examples as well, not just SFML) makes me think you (Valve) might encounter it sooner or later, that is why I'm just letting you know here.
The issue is indeed related to the intel drivers(that is where the bug lies), but there are workarounds, and you only get the problem if you use libX11 in a certain way. See these links for a bugreport and the SFML-thread from where we debugged it:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54971
http://en.sfml-dev.org/forums/index.php?topic=9149.0
Even if it isn't even related to any of your code, I still think its a good know-about because of how unpredictable the bug can be. The issue was raised several times for a very long time in the SFML-forums before it was worked around.
The game can't stomach sparsely numbered shader uniforms' locations, see traces, explanation and a workaround hack at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47607. I'm not going to follow up with the game studio about this — somebody interested please point them to the fd.o bugreport.
@amonakov: I have notified the developers of your finding. Thanks for your time in investigating this.
@Benedolt, @amonakov: The developer has released an update to Steam which they say fixes the issue. I have not been able to verify it yet, but I will try soon.
For more info: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47607
Can you try the game again and post your results?
@jljusten: I just tried it and can confirm that it does work!!! I played only the first introductory level, but that works fine! :) Thanks, for your effort!
I still have same issue with both intel and nvidia cards. with intel I can see intro video but right after I see mouse arrow game crashes. with nvidia, if I launch steam via 'optirun steam' it even doesn't play intro video.
here is output with intel video:

This was fixed in mesa-9.1.2 which was just released today. If you are interested, commit 4f441462 is the change that fixed this game. I expect that Ubuntu 13.04 will update to 9.1.2.
thank you. I'll wait for 9.1.2 in ubuntu and try.
If Anyone is still looking for a solution. Copying the main binary from the Humble release to the steam folder fixes this.
wget http://withg.org/parkerlreed/AnomalyWarzoneEarth
chmod a+x AnomalyWarzoneEarth
cp AnomalyWarzoneEarth ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Anomaly\ Warzone\ Earth/AnomalyWarzoneEarth
Then just launch in Steam
Yes, binary from the installer works for me. Suppose the Steam release will work when and if they push that version.
Nothing extracted yet.
When I try to start Anomaly Warzone Earth a transparent fullscreen window appears for a split seconds and then closes again. No error message. The terminal output hints at a segfault:
If I can provide you with any other data, just say so. Also I'm not sure if my graphics chip is officially supported - I can't figure out it's name. (The processor is a Celeron 847.) But see for yourself:
