A segfault also occurred upon attempting to log in for the first time. Subsequent attempts did not appear to result in a segfault.
Possibly similar to https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/142
I've got the same thing on a 32bit Ubuntu 12.04 VM.

chrisforrence, what is your graphics adapter and what drivers do you have installed?
I am having the same issue, I am running an AMD Radeon 6850 with fglrx beta as recommended. Ubuntu 64-bit kernel 3.2.0-35-generic-pae, AMD Phenom II X2. The same problem occurred on stock fglrx as well.
I'm kind of getting the same error.
I'm running Arch Linux x86_64 + Gnome3. My graphics card is a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series and I'm using open source drivers.

The original issue shouldn't occur any more since we block running as root, so should this issue be closed?
Closing as the original problem can't happen any more.
As super user, started Steam for the first time, got to the first screen regarding creating an account or logging in, clicked log in, and Steam segfaulted. The following is the output from running steam
