It all looks fine for me. I have Korean fonts installed, though, do you? If not, are you testing just to see what would happen without font support? If you install a Korean font does it work?

I only installed the font, so all I did was "apt-get install ttf-wqy-zenhei". I unfortunately don't know anything about Korean so I didn't try to change my system locale or set up input.
How did things work out? Is there still an issue here to keep this open?

Oh, I saw this bug report too late.
The default Korean font in Ubuntu is NanumGothic(나눔고딕) for sans-serif.
It's in fonts-nanum package, and Ubuntu 12.04 LiveCD already ships with it as default - even without installing through language-selector!
Also, the link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KoreanSetupHowto contains too old(obsolute) information.
You don't need to do anything for installing sans-serif Korean font, because it's already included.
Anyway, I can confirm this bug is no more affected on system with no ttf-wqy-zenhei installed, so I will not reopen this issue. (fixed accidently?)
p.s afaik, ttf-wqy-zenhei is Chinese font, and it includes some Japanese and KOREAN characters.
If nothing changed at source code, I guess your system is not recent Ubuntu based distros, or accidently remove fonts-nanum.
As a result, it makes installing ttf-wqy-zenhei looks like solution, although it's not.

The client is unusable in Korean.
All the fonts are being smashed together into one clump.
This may be related to issue #415
Instead of empty boxes displaying, the fonts are just showing up clumped together.
