Can you run it from console and post output, if you haven't resolved it until now?

Not to seem like a noob or nothing, but how?

If you've installed steam using apt (.deb package), you should be able to run it just by executing steam in the console (as normal user, not root).
What Linux distribution are you using?

Did you resolve the issue yourself @JasonBreen ? It appears your graphics drivers need some poking.
