I've tried the STEAM_RUNTIME=0 and SDL_SOUND="alsa" and "pulseaudio" tricks, neither of which work for me.
I am running this on a Lenovo W510 if it helps.

More data: FTL and Amnesia both have sound, so it's not all Linux games.

Okay, so from one of the links deep down in that page, I found a post saying to do,
env SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa AUDIODEV=hw:0,0 STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam
I did this, and it worked! I tried removing the AUDIODEV=hw:0,0 and it did not work.
