@mic-e We see this crash quite a bit with the AMD driver you've been using. AMD is aware of this particular crash, though you can add on to their awareness via the contact information here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games#driver-contact-information
Also, we're tracking these Source 1 game issues over in https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games/issues . Going forward, if you'd open these bugs there, it'd be easier to track.

While there are multiple bugs related to CSS crashing on startup, they are all either closed or unrelated.
I experience this bug with a XUbuntu system, Steam Client and CSS that have all been fully updated as of 2013-02-18.
The problem occurs with the default XUbuntu desktop environment (xfwm), as well as with i3.
I have an ATI Radeon HD 5750 graphics card, running with the proprietary fglrx driver, as installed from the Ubuntu repositories.
My system configuration:
I have, for the sake of completeness of this bug report, made two core dumps/stack traces/logs, one with STEAM_RUNTIME=0, and one with STEAM_RUNTIME=1.
The two invocations were:
and
The results did not differ.
In both cases, after typing 'continue' in the gdb prompt, CSS opened full screen, black, and segfaulted immediately.
When launching CSS without gdb to freeze it after it segfaults, it dies immediately, without opening a fullscreen black window.
Now follows the output of both invocations.
I have uploaded the two core dumps here: http://pub.sft.mx/mic-glg-css-coredumps.tar.xz
Warning: They are pretty huge (unpacked: ~400MB each)
If you need any additional info regarding my system configuration or wish me to run an other test, feel free to contact me via Mail: [email protected]
Edit: With the free driver it runs, but it is unplayable.
An other edit: With the most recent AMD beta driver, as downloaded from here http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx, it works as well, and is perfectly playable.
However, the driver displays a 'AMD Testing use only' logo in the bottom right corner of the screen.
