Could this be related to #19? Try disabling your Intel GPU and see if it loads.
First of all, I'm from germany, so sorry for my bad english.
But I also have a problem with starting Team Fortress 2 and I have an AMD graphic card too. It's an old model, the "ATI Radeon X1650".
When I click on the Team Fortress play-button, steam trys to load the game but then suddenly a message pops up, which says :
"Could not find required OpenGL entry point 'glcolorMaskIndexedEXT'| Either your video card is unsupported, or your OpenGL driver needs to be updated."
Unfortunetaly I'm not a experienced user. But maybe anybody have an idea how to fix this in a step-by-step manual?
Or is my video card really unsupported - where can I find the list of supprted video cards?
Note: I have Kubuntu 12.04
@marcel113 your issue is entirely different, and your issue is caused from having an old graphics card that doesn't support the required OpenGL extension. I would suggest you file a bug asking them to be more graceful with older graphics cards (in that they tell you that your graphics card is too old rather than sending you a message like that.)
I believe this is two separate bugs in one.
@envygeeks: same problem (TF2 starts with black screen, but sounds indicate it's working underneath) with radeon driver, certainly not related to Intel GPU, as it's disabled:
$ lspci | fgrep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Redwood PRO [Radeon HD 5500 Series]
As for fglrx, TF2 is known to not work with the version available through Ubuntu repositories (I believe it's 2:8.960-0ubuntu1; symptoms are that TF2 will complain about unsupported OpenGL extension and fail to start). Steam is silent about fglrx not being the latest version. This was discussed on Steam forums (and even a hacky LD_PRELOAD trick to override strcmp was suggested at some point). Downloading latest version (Catalyst 12.10) from ATI website seems to fix the problem.
I guess I'm in a bind here -- I have the same problem, but I'm running Linux Mint 14, with Xorg 1.13, which the Catalyst driver 12.10 from AMD doesn't support. I'll just sit and wait then...
i have this issue running slackware64-current multilib, on an AMD e-450 APU (cpu/gpu) Radeon HD 6320 using both catalyst 12.10, and 12.11-beta11..
its driving me nuts.
This only happens on a composited desktop. I can play TF2 on GnomeClassic (fallback, no effects) or XFCE desktop.
Using Linux Mint 14_x64 with 12.11 fglrx drivers (via xorg-edgers).
AMD Catalyst 13.1 is out with xorg 1.13 support, it's time to retest.
@gdrewb-valve I don't know how bad development teams do ticketing but normally good development teams close a ticket with a message explaining why, please follow good software practice on a public tracker... that is unless you like leaving people in the dark, then by all means, take an Oracle approach.
@Tele42 's comment is the reason. This is an AMD driver issue and there are new AMD drivers to test. Further bugs should be reported to AMD.
Getting the same error with an HD 7870 on fglrx 13.1 from AMD's website, using Xorg 1.13
Nothing extracted yet.
When using AMD's fglrx proprietary graphics driver, TF2 fails to launch entirely. When the open-source driver is activated, TF2 launches, and plays all appropriate sound, only it is accompanied by a black screen. Even clicking buttons works, I was able to move my cursor (which was still visible) to the bottom-left area of the screen and exit the game.

Running Xubuntu 12.10, with switchable graphics.
