From the discussion on the forums this is most likely a Mesa driver issue and not a Steam issue.
Okay, sorry, I did not check the forums for similar issues. Will do next time!
I'm seeing this same issue and am not using the Mesa driver I think. I'm using the fglrx for my ATI card.
@sajanNOPPIX How recent a version of fglrx? Can you post the summary (don't need the listing of extensions, resolutions and such) from glxinfo?
@gdrewb-valve Terribly sorry mate, I just reinstalled my machine and upgraded the video card. Don't remember the fglrx version. However, there is a possibility it was not completely up to date.
On this new machine I'm using Mesa 2.1 and like you mentioned before, the issue is there. Same as before when I was using fglrx.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.
No problem, thanks for getting back on your current state.
There has been an update to Mesa that has corrected some problems similar to this. If you update to the latest Mesa do things improve?
I've got Mesa 9.0.1 installed and I get this graphical corruption after using the steam overlay in World of Goo. I also get it in Osmos and occasionally And Yet It Moves.
I also get it in Space Pirates and Zombies.
A fix for this will be available in the next release.
Steps to reproduce:

The artifacts seems to be rendered from the overlay, as one of the pictures is part of my profile picture. The white text seems to be the text from the overlay.
I'm not sure, but I believe I experienced differing results depending on what shortcut I used to open the overlay. I tried shift+tab, shift+f1 and shift+space.
Trying to press the key combinations with the Steam overlay disabled does not produce the bug.
