In the past you only saw the orange box ads if there were no ads sold in your region, others may have seen different stuff in the US for example.
but I don't have any ads anymore on the UI or the maps since the change to steampipe.

I remember this was introduced a long time ago when advertisement was to go beyond websites and become something large within games, or so was to be expected.
Of course Valve tried this out with Counter-Strike, without any significant results.
Right now the advertisement space inside Counter-Strike repeats a constant out-dated advertisement picture of The Orange Box. It would be a comfortable improvement if this advertisement space were to be removed entirely.
