I tried using the standard fglrx driver, but I have 2 monitors (2560x1600 and 1920x1080) that totals 4480 wide and exceeds the width allowed by the driver (max 4096). This caused the two screens to have an overlap (same image on both displays in the overlap region). With fglrx steam did start, although no games ran due to a different problem that might now be solved. The opens source video drivers had no problems with this size issue. So I decided to try the fglrx-amdcccle-experimental-9 driver. This solved the overlap problem (same as open source driver), but now steam will not run at all. If there are updates, a widow pops up while updates download, but after that I get a core dump. When I run again from the command line, the following is displayed:

john@transition$ steam steam://games

The program 'steam' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.

(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

When I go to the list of issues, I don't see this. Sorry if I created it more than once.

MMrSchism 2012-12-21 github

Your second post was removed; no worries.

Nnormcf 2012-12-21 github

Thanks, I closed it too (and a couple other dups). Can I add labels, or do I need to let others do that?

MMrSchism 2012-12-21 github

The question is: do you have the ability to add labels?

Nnormcf 2012-12-21 github

I know this regards amd drivers, so I thought I would try to narrow down other peoples searches for dups by adding a label, but I cannot see a way to do it yet.

MMrSchism 2012-12-21 github

I added the label for you.

Nnormcf 2012-12-21 github

Nice, thank-you.

Ffrankc-valve maintainer 2012-12-21 github

normcf, labels can only be added by the Valve Linux team and our moderators (e.g. MrSchism).
In addition, it would be great if you could report this AMD issue (and future ones) to the AMD forums. You can find more information here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/4/846939614929131085/.

Thanks for the report.

that totals 4480 wide and exceeds the width allowed by the driver (max 4096).

Where are you getting that as the maximum allowed? I usually use OSS radeon driver, but figured I'd try fglrx so I can play with steam. Using 2560x1600 + (1920x1200 x 2) works fine in both.

When I do it, I get the same (maybe not the exact same because it was a while ago) catalyst screen. I can lay out the two screens, but as soon as I press Apply, the positions are reset so that the max width is 4096. This causes them to overlap. My video card, RADEON HD 4670, is much older than the 7900 series I infer you have, and I seem to remember something about these older cards using a "legacy" driver which is different. Perhaps the fglrx driver has improved since I last tried it. If I get time this coming weekend, I'll try again.

Bboombatower 2013-02-07 github

Ah yea, I don't know about legacy. My last card was 4870, but I bought 3rd monitor along with new card so never tried this setup on old card. Interesting.

Hi, I tried the fglrx driver again and get the two images attached.

ScreenshotCatalyst2
As you can see in the second image, the two monitors overlap. The last time I tried this, I spent several hours trying to find a way to widen it beyond 4096, but it seems to be a limit in the fglrx driver (at least for "legacy" cards).

RRussianNeuroMancer 2013-02-10 github

@normcf It works with FOSS driver for you?

Nnormcf 2013-02-10 github

The Steam gui works with the Open Source Drivers, but TF2 does not. It stops with 'Required OpenGL extension "GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc" is not supported. Please install S3TC texture support'. After I tested the Catalyst driver, I put the Open Source drivers back. I didn't test the game, so it may have worked. Also, installing the fglrx driver causes ubuntu to hang on the reboot. It hangs so bad, I could not get it to shutdown nicely, even when I logged in from another machine and did a shutdown. kill -9 would not kill the Xorg process either.

Did you install libtxc-dxtn or libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0?

MMajkl578 2013-02-10 github

You'll need libtxc-dxtn:i386 to get S3TC support.

RRussianNeuroMancer 2013-02-10 github

:i386

That right point. I almost forgot TF2 is x86 application, and x86_64 library doesn't fit here.

Nnormcf 2013-02-10 github

Guys, thanks. I didn't have either installed. I looked for libtxc-dxtn:i386 but I didn't see it in the synaptic package manager, so I installed libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386 and TF2 ran, but the screen was completely black. Luckily I was able to open a terminal on the second screen and kill TF2.

Current libraries have /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libtxc_dxtn.so which is a symbolic link to /etc/alternatives/libtxc-dxtn-i386-linux-gnu which is, in turn, a symbolic link to /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libtxc_dxtn_s2tc.so.0 which in turn is a symbolic link to /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libtxc_dxtn_s2tc.so.0.0.0
Obviously it is seeing some library because I no longer get the GL_EXT... popup. Googling, I tried setting R600_ENABLE_S3TC=1 before running steam, but I still get the black screen. I also tried the LC_NUMERIC=POSIX fix, but still to no avail. Perhaps there is a newer fix that I couldn't find.

So your problem most likely here:

Ubuntu 12.04 up to date

In my opinion you need Ubuntu 12.10 to get running or Ubuntu 12.10 with latest FOSS drivers from Xorg Edgers PPA if you want better performance (later don't forget to use "ppa-purge xorg-edgers" before upgrade to 13.04).

Closing old non-Valve issue (can still be found in search).
