Hi,

I've just downloaded and installed CS:S, and, after solving a missing dependency, I was able to start the game.
My problem is that there seems to be no font support for it: every character is replaced by a black rectangle, and sometimes there's no text at all.

I tried logging on to a random sever (via random clicking) and that seems to work, but when I reached the team (or weapon?) selection screen, there was no way I would've understood what to do.

I'm attaching 2 screenshots, one of the first page of the game, and one of what I think is the "Settings" menu. (4th link, top to bottom, in the main screen)

Thanks!

Claudio

@flyingstar16 Maybe installing the package msttcorefonts, it renders the text if the game is searching for microsoft fonts

Whoops, sorry.

I'll attach the console output ASAP (Steam is updating, right now, so I can't generate one and I have to go)

Shakaran, I have them; I googled a bit, before opening the issue, but none of the solutions I found worked for me :/

claudio@Chuck:~$ apt-cache search msttcorefonts
ttf-mscorefonts-installer - Installer for Microsoft TrueType core fonts
claudio@Chuck:~$ dpkg -l |grep corefonts
ii ttf-mscorefonts-installer 3.5 all Installer for Microsoft TrueType core fonts

Couldn't help but notice... do you an optimus setup?

Fflyingstar16 2013-02-24 github

Updated previous comment with console output.

Yes, I do have an optimus setup, but I'm not currently using the Nvidia card, only the Sandybridge :)

(How did you know? from the number of logical cards, or because of the Sandybridge card?=

MMrSchism 2013-02-25 github

Largely, it was the Sandybridge being declared.

With this setup, using bumblebee (ideally Primusrun) would be the solution. However, your Mesa is also outdated. You have two possible solutions:

A. use Primusrun. This should fix the issue by using the Nvidia card.

B. update your Mesa to Mesa 9. Less likely to fix the issue, but it just may work.

If neither work, let us know.

Fflyingstar16 2013-02-25 github

Tried using primusrun/optirun and it didn't work..

I can't update mesa, right now, because Debian has no Mesa 9 package and I need my laptop working.. Is there anything else I can try?

Hello @flyingstar16, are you still experiencing this issue with an up to date system?

Closing as general video driver quality from 2013 is no longer relevant.

Nothing extracted yet.
