Puddle game unplayable, because:

  1. Couldn't see fonts.
  2. Couldn't see liquid in the game.

You should let the game developer know about this also.

Jjljusten 2013-02-25 github

You can play the game fine if you right click on the game, goto properties and then unselect "Enable Steam Community In-Game".

I think @davidw-valve is looking at it.

Thanks it's solve problem with fonts.

But game still not playable because I couldn't see liquid.

Yes, I'm looking into it. The workaround with disabling Steam Community In-Game can be used in the meantime.

@NTMan: Can you post your glxinfo output? Hmm, I wonder why you are seeing GL 2.1 on Sandy Bridge rather than 3.0. (Although, I played the game fine on Ironlake, and it only supports 2.1.)

@NTMan: I think I might know what is happening for you. I think this has to do with Fedora 18's Mesa 9.0 build. I think it should be fixed by Mesa 9.1, but that was just released last Friday. I'll try to work with Fedora to see if a Mesa 9.1 update might be possible for Fedora 18.

(Update: The comment above was specifically for the issue where the liquid is invisible within the game. The menu/font corruption is a separate issue relating to the overlay, and @davidw-valve is investigating this.)

Jjljusten 2013-02-28 github

@davidw-valve has found a bug in Mesa that leads to the menu/font corruption. I will get this bug fixed in Mesa.

Thanks David!

@NTMan: Does the Intel Linux Graphics Installer (https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/2013/intel-linux-graphics-installer) help with the invisible liquid issue for you on Fedora 18?

@NTMan: Are you behind a proxy?

Unfortunately, I found out from someone more familiar with the current state of the Intel Linux Graphics Installer that it doesn't update Mesa for Fedora 18 (right now). So, unfortunately, even if it had succeeded to install, it would not have fixed the issue. Sorry for wasting your time on this.

I'll continue trying to get a solution to your issue for Fedora 18.

NNTMan 2013-03-14 github

@NTMan: Are you behind a proxy?
No

NNTMan 2013-03-15 github

Today Mesa updated to 9.1 version in updates-testing repository, but issue still here :(

Jjljusten 2013-03-15 github

@NTMan: I believe it is this Fedora specific change that is causing Puddle to not work with Mesa 9.1 work for you. I'll try to discuss it with Red Hat. Sorry for the difficulty, and thanks for your time and information in helping debug this issue.

Eelad661 2013-05-03 github

This affects Portal as well.

As I wrote in [ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games issue #244](https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games/issues/244):

Solution for Fedora users:

sudo yum install libtxc_dxtn.i686 libtxc_dxtn.x86_64

You need rpmfusion installed for this package to be available.

Without it, mesa on Fedora will not support s3tc, which is a patent-encumbered texture compression algorithm that Source apparently needs.

@jljusten, perhaps the solution for this would be having a bundled copy of this library inside Steam? or perhaps make Steam available on rpmfusion and have the rpm package dependent on libtxc_dxtn?

NNTMan 2013-05-03 github

Installing libtxc_dxtn not solve this problem!

Please see my demonstration video:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0nwzlfiB4aQeXJrLVVJdEVLNGs/edit?usp=sharing

Eelad661 2013-05-03 github

So perhaps @jljusten's analysis of this problem is incorrect and it's not the same as the Source one, because it does fix the issue for Source games.

Jjljusten 2013-05-03 github

@elad661: @NTMan said libtxc_dxtn didn't help. I think the s3tc issue in the issue you linked impacts Valve's games, but Puddle seems to be impacted by the way Red Hat builds Mesa. Or, can you successfully use puddle on Fedora? If so, perhaps the rpmfusion Mesa packages don't have the same issue as Red Hat's version.

@NTMan: We're still trying to work with Red Hat on this, but it has been very slow going...

Eelad661 2013-05-03 github

Nope, seems to be only Valve thing. I quoted it here because what you said in that issue that these issues are similar, so I thought the same solution may apply.

Did you try mailing the fedora-devel mailing list and asking why mesa is being built this way in Fedora?

Jjljusten 2013-05-03 github

@elad661: Oh, I see what you mean where I said they sounded similar in the other issue. Sorry. But, I guess it looks like the two games to have separate issues. RE: Red Hat; we are communicating. Unfortunately, that is not the issue.

Jjljusten 2013-05-03 github

@elad661: What does Help=>System Information show for you when using rpmfusion on Fedora? In particular, I'm interested in the Driver Version line.

Eelad661 2013-05-03 github

rpmfusion does not alter Fedora's mesa.

Basically, mesa (not only Fedora's) will only enable s3tc when this package is installed. Some distros may install it together with the regular mesa packages, but this is not the case with Fedora because of software patents.

Anyway, you do realize that Fedora is developed by a community, and not only redhat? you might get faster response if you use a public mailing list.

@NTMan: Red Hat indicated that the Fedora 19 test Mesa builds should have fixed this now, but I haven't yet been able to verify this myself yet. I'm not sure if this will be fixed on Fedora 18 and older versions.

For anyone else looking into this, if your issue is related to the Intel driver you'll see it go away if you set "LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1". Of course, you'll also get a pretty slide-show, but it's useful for debugging.
