Before it is suggested, I've tried this with STEAM_RUNTIME=0 and get the same results as below. When attempting to run Steam, I get the following output:

brwyatt@crimson:~$ steam

Steam was running previously (including after the official launch), but recently started having this issue.

I have attempted to remove all Steam-related files in my home directory, and have purged and re-installed Steam and get the same results. (The directories did change from ~/Steam/ to ~/.local/share/Steam/, but that's due to the re-install and changes in packaging). I've also updated my AMD drivers to 13.1 in an attempt to resolve this, but have had no luck along that route either.

System Info:

Additional note: If I remove all files, I can get the popup for the EULA, but it will segfault immediately after accepting.

Just to clarify, despite the similar title, this is not (or at least does not appear to be) the same issue as #2016 , as I cannot even get Steam to start.

UPDATE:
Looking around a bit more, I found #1934, which seems similar. I used DEBUGGER=gdb from that thread and got the following additional information (which differs from that issue):
http://brwyatt.net/files/GDB_DEBUGGER.txt

And also, here is the output from using STEAM_DEBUG=true and LD_DBUG=libs:
http://brwyatt.net/files/STEAM_DEBUG.txt
http://brwyatt.net/files/LD_DBUG-libs.txt

Thanks for the useful debug output! Are you on the latest steam.deb update? if so, would you try steam --reset and see if that fixes it.

Bbrwyatt 2013-02-26 github

I did get the latest steam_latest.deb from both the site using the Install Steam link, as well as the latest steam-launcher package from the repo. (the second being the version currently installed)

Output from the above command:

brwyatt@crimson:~$ steam --reset
mv: cannot stat `/home/brwyatt/.steam/registry.vdf': No such file or directory
Installing bootstrap /home/brwyatt/.local/share/Steam/bootstrap.tar.xz
Reset complete!

Starting Steam after that results in the same error as before.

Update 1
As suggested by slouken on the Steam for Linux forum on my post there ( http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/864960354287833327/ ), I ran the debugger again, and typed 'bt' after each error:
http://brwyatt.net/files/GDB_DEBUGGER-2.txt

I also came across the following post this morning in the #ubuntu-steam channel on Freenode:
02:44:26 < directhex> yenic, there used to be a metapackage in USC for 64-bit users, but it was removed due to a glaring bug which would remove opengl if you installed it

I did previously have the steam64 package installed, and working, before. All traces of it should currently be removed, however (and then drivers and such re-installed recently as well).

Update 2
Found some things to try from a forum post about a missing libgl.so.1. Even though mine isn't missing, I figured I'd try anyway. Don't know if this is useful, but figured I'd include it. This caused Steam to crash differently, and seems to have uploaded an actual crash dump this time:

brwyatt@crimson:~$ LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib32:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH steam

I should note that the value of $LD_LIBRARY_PATH seems to be blank. The output from using LD_DEBUG=libs as well seems to point to a different issue: http://brwyatt.net/files/LD_LIBRARY_PATH-LD-DEBUG-libs.txt

Backtrace does appear the same, however (however, it never shows the longer stack that appeared previously which contained crashhandler.so):

(gdb) bt

#2 0xf782699d in ?? () from /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1
Backtrace stopped: previous frame inner to this frame (corrupt stack?)

Again, not sure if that helps, but I hope it is in some way useful.

If you're crashing in the OpenGL driver, you're likely running into a bug in your OpenGL. I would recommend trying the commercial drivers, if available, or debugging it and finding out what the issue is.

Bbrwyatt 2013-02-26 github

Unfortunately, I'm running the latest non-beta drivers available from AMD ( 13.1 from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.42&lang=English ). Graphics card is a 7970.

The debug output above seems to point to calls to functions that do not exist. (but I'm unclear on what is making the call and into which library, it could even be missing functions in the kernel).

Should I try and find the 12.11 drivers and try that? I could only find 12.11 beta drivers through Google, and they seem to be unlisted on AMD's own site. (In addition to there seemingly never being a final version for 12.11). Additionally, is there a recommended kernel version I could try?

UPDATE
I was able to get Steam to run by pointing /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1 to /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so (this is what /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so was pointing to). Originally it was pointing to /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1.2 which, in turn, pointed to /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/fglrx/fglrx-libGL.so.1.2 (which I assume is actually what we want). Steam does seem to complain about this, but seems to continue and run fine:

libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast

In any case, this did get Steam to run, at least. I'm currently installing TF2 to see how that will run. I've tested Cogs (as I had it installed separately) and it appears to run just fine. Steam did download and install an update (not sure if that is just a "first run" thing or not). I'll test TF2 first, and see if things still work after setting the link back.

UPDATE 2
While Steam would run and download games, TF2 failed to run with an Open GL error and stating that my graphics card was unsupported (No surprise there). On the bright side, though, I can start Steam if there is any information needed from within Steam itself or if that can be useful in some way. Steam still fails to start if I switch the links back.

Bbrwyatt 2013-03-01 github

I have gone back and installed the 12.11beta11 drivers, but initially faced the exact same issue. The exact same output as above using all debug methods previously tried. However, I did find something, after some digging:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 Feb 26 15:27 /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1 -> /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 48 Feb 17 10:29 /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1.2 -> /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/fglrx/fglrx-libGL.so.1.2

and that /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/fglrx/fglrx-libGL.so.1.2 was also last modified on the 17th. I did some searching, and found /usr/lib32/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2, which was modified today, and relinked /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1.2 to point there instead.

So far Steam appears to have started and appears to be running normally, as does TF2, back at the Framerates I expect.

I do not know if this was also the issue I had with the 13.1 drivers (and if this was some change made in 13.1, I am not sure what action can/should be taken going forward); but at the very least, this might be something good to know for others who may run into this issue when updating to 13.1, or downgrading to 12.11. I'm not sure how libGL.so.1 got relinked, but libGL.so.1.2 did not (remaining pointed at an incorrect version), but correcting the links seems to have resolved the issue.

For easy reference, the correct chain of softlinks for AMD 12.11beta11 is:
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1 -> /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1.2 -> /usr/lib32/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2

UPDATE
Might have spoken too soon, playing TF2 seems to lag an incredibly huge amount, even when playing the training map locally against bots, and framerates seem to have plummeted. (I've also noticed unusually high CPU as well)

I am considering reinstalling just to reset any libraries that could be incorrect, and installing 12.11beta11 on that fresh install. I'm willing to hold off on that if there is any further information you would like of anything you want me to try first to track down or fix the issue. (if you feel such action is beneficial for Steam on Linux)

Sscottlu 2013-03-01 github

Thanks for posting this update. I think you've confirmed that it is some sort of graphics driver config problem. Your plan to try installing fresh makes sense.

Bbrwyatt 2013-03-02 github

Will do. I'll go ahead and try with 13.1 off the fresh install, just to see if there is anything that comes up on that end (since I'm reinstalling anyway) that may be of use.

UPDATE
Fresh install with 13.1: Worked fine at first on a local "training" map. 60FPS and things were... alright. There was some issue with scanlines but that's easy enough to resolve. However, when I joined an online server, everything changed. FPS dropped to 25-30, and input started lagging/sticking (not going to bother trying to describe just how bad it was, I'm not even sure how to convey just how drastic it was). Ping was up to about 77ms (and I'm on 25/25 with FiOS), but that alone wouldn't have caused the issues. It would have made things laggy, but not my own movements, and it certainly wouldn't be causing the inputs to stick. I can try deleting my Steam folder in my home directory (I used rsync to backup and restore my home directory between installs) and see if it is something there before moving on to 12.11beta11 drivers (since that is the recommended driver version).

UPDATE2
Just got an interesting "warning" from the Steam client. I never tried Big Picture before, but figured I'd start it up and see how it handled in this situation (after a re-install of Steam). It alerted me to use 13.2 instead of 13.1. Is 13.2 now the recommended version over 12.11? Or is there something special in the beta versions of the drivers that Steam is looking for or uses?

--sub-update: Scratch that. I checked out all the release notes, and 13.2 has a specific fix for a bug that effected Steam Big Picture. I will try installing 13.2beta6 and go from there, see if it resolves the other issues somehow as well.

Bbrwyatt 2013-03-02 github

13.2beta6 works great! Even in Multiplayer, I'm getting 120+FPS when in an isolated location, and 40-60FPS when in the middle of action (in TF2), which is what I expected from before. I still have to remove that stupid AMD watermark (if there is any kind of pressure y'all can put to AMD to have them stop doing that, I'd be more than thankful), but everything seems to be running fine, and it does appear to be a graphics issue.

I don't know if there is anything you guys can do regarding this kind of weirdness (which sits firmly on AMD, I think), and even then if that would be something you would even want to pursue. I'm content to consider the issue closed, but there is any further information you guys would like or anything further you would like me to try on this issue, I'll be happy to assist.

Thanks again for the quick initial response and feedback through this issue, even though it ended up being an issue unrelated to Steam (as well as letting this remain open to let the issue be documented after that discovery).

Sscottlu 2013-03-05 github

Great news that it's working! Yes we found that the 13.1 drivers did not work with Big Picture (crashed), so we put that version check and message in the day before the official launch. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about the watermark, that is in AMD's court. There is a forum however that AMD put up for driver specific feedback. You can find more info here:

Thanks for working through this and posting your results along the way, awesome.
