Valve can only add their games for what I know, they can't do much about other titles other than selling them. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Linux versions for these games already exist. They just need to be uploaded
so that they can be distributed by steam. I'm not asking for a port.

The client is still in Beta at the moment. The current priority (I think, anyways), is to squash all the major bugs, and get all Source Engine games up and running perfectly. In the meantime, you can always manually add them to your library so they'll launch through steam, overlay and all.
Lets fix a few misconceptions here:
Steam's Linux client is not in beta. The reason they can't add other games is that they need to be given the correct version of the games from the developers. Just because Valve has the Windows client of a game doesn't mean they have the Linux client. Even if the client is freely available, it is the responsibility of the developer to specifically hand over the right program files and properly integrate it with the Steam API (which is responsible overlay, achievements, etc.). It's not up to Valve; it's up to devs.
They'll come when they come. If you want them to come faster, talk to the game developers.
There's a lot of games that are available for Linux but are not available for Linux through steam :(
