I think it means that Dungeon Defenders is in closed beta now.
Yep, there is "linuxbeta" entry in properties -> betas.
It's in closed beta. If you had beta access to the game, it would download the files. This is also a duplicate of many bugs, most historically #28.
Same bug here :(
It's not a bug; if you have beta access to the game's linux client, you can play.
Or if you have the binary from the Humble Bundle. (Not sure on how well it works, I only confirmed that Steam could launch it, I also noticed that it didn't have my character(s) (I'm assuming they're locally stored on another computer?)) Then I had trouble convincing it to rebind keys.
Would it not be possible for steam to inform you of this when you download it?

That's been presented as a feature request. Currently, Steam's not capable of notifying you when you can download it.
Nothing extracted yet.
I noticed that Dungeon Defenders appeared in the Linux list, so I told Steam to download it.
Imagine my surprise when it finished downloading before I even had jumped to another desktop -- turns out that Steam actually only created the directory for Dungeon Defenders.
Someone else reported the same thing here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/864961537287636831/?tscn=1362476556
