This bug is no longer reproducible on my machine, maybe it was just a minor hiccup.
I'll close it under the guise of it being non-reproducible, but should it arise again (and should that instance provide additional information) or should it repeat consistently, I'll re-open it.

I'm using Steam on Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit (Linux 3.7.0-7-generic) with Unity and 313.xx Nvidia drivers. When I start Half-Life, the Steam dialog appears, closes, but no game window is visible on any workspace.
But it is running, because Steam won't let me run it again and
pgrepshows this:If I then run
kill 6919, then the windows comes up partially blacked out and unresponsive. The only way to close it is to kill it withSIGKILL.Any help would be appreciated!
