I got a brand new Ubutnu 10.12 installation (amd64) and installed Steam. There were a number of games (Space Pirates and Zombies) that would do nothing when I clicked on them. The game didn't start, there was no flash. I wasn't sure, so I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the games (a few times). I eventually ran steam from a command line and saw that there was a library missing error. In this case, I was missing libSDL1.2 for amd64 (but I had the i386 version for Dungeon of Dremdor).

Possible suggestions:

Have Steam keep track of the libraries needed so it can report it to the user when they install.
Takes the stderr output from a game if it fails to run (or exits in say 20 seconds) and display it to the user.

In both cases, it would be nice for a brand new installation to see the issues to help track them down.

(Other than that, loving it already.)

We are addressing dependency management in an upcoming release, but until then, the game needs to ensure its dependencies are being met.
